Messi – An excellent case study in entrepreneurship

You must be thinking what’s the connection between a football legend and entrepreneurship. Believe me when I say there’s a lot we can learn from Messi as startup founders. I’m sorry CR7 fans but for me Messi is the best footballer of the current era, maybe even better than Pele and Maradona. Well, let’s not get into the discussion of who’s better and instead look at how we can be better entrepreneurs by learning some qualities from Messi’s game play.

key learnings in entrepreneurship from messi's game play

Messi can foresee whats coming his way

Messi is one of the best footballers at getting the ball around. Nothing seems to stop him when he’s running with the ball in his foot. He dodges his opponents brilliantly and also has a solid passing precision. He’s able to achieve this by meticulously observing the field setup and predicting his opponents move. That’s what you need while running a startup as well, isn’t it? You should have a solid grasp of the trends in your industry, knowledge of your competitor’s moves and act accordingly.

Messi is unpredictable

Each one of you must have observed how Messi’s opponents seem to fall apart when they are chasing him barely managing to touch the ball when he’s dribbling. Well, that comes from the fact that Messi is highly unpredictable. His opponents cannot guess his next move because of which they are left confused and unable to stop him. Unpredictability is a lethal weapon in the startup world. If you are able to keep your competitors guessing your next move without success, there’s no stopping.

Messi has an exceptional reflex

Of course, there are times when the legend does fall down. Being the best dribbler in the world, he’s had his share of tackles, sometimes even nasty ones. But in most of the cases, he takes no time to get up again. Unlike a lot of other players who would roll and/or somersault and claim foul play even for minor tackles (cough, CR7, cough), Messi, as far as possible, is back in business within a fraction of second. This leaves his opponents little to no chance to gain back the control of the ball. Isn’t that inspiring? Even while running a startup, there are a lot of times when things go downward spiral. As an entrepreneur you should not dwell into the downfall much longer but get back on your feet as soon as possible. After all, time is the most important asset you have, isn’t it?

Messi knows how to score elegantly

After all the hardwork getting the ball around and dodging opponents, the last thing that remains is the finishing. I just wonder how can he have such an amazing striking capabilities? In such a sort time how does he manage to decide whether he should hit a power shot, chip over the keeper or simply lay the ball at a certain corner? That’s solid judgement. And its always a fun to watch him score. It’s like Steve Jobs presenting a new product to the world. You are so captivated by their finishing that you are left in awe. That’s how your customers should feel when they look at your product, isn’t it?

Well, those are some lessons I learnt in entrepreneurship by following Messi for a long time. If there’s anything else you believe we can learn from him which I might have missed, please feel free to write down in the comment section below.
